Fall 2008 Plan Details
Elizabeth and Tao camped on the land for over a month and a half and explored it as thoroughly as the ticks and chiggers would allow them to. After lots of back and forth they decided to spend the spring building a straw bale building that will eventually serve as the visitors' center and provide composting toilets, showers, kitchen area, screened-in porch and act as a general gathering area for visitors camping at the ecovillage.
The site for the campground lodge will be located in the northern section of the property where ticks and chiggers do not seem to be as prevalent. While the vast majority of the property is wooded the exact site of straw bale lodge will be former site of an old cabin and is thus relatively open. In addition to being open the location is easily accessible by dirt road which will also need some work, i.e. more gravel spread on it.
Camping spaces will be located further down the road accessing the site which runs along a mostly flat ridge line. Very little vegetation will need to be disturbed to make space for the camp sites although there will undoubtedly be some soil compaction.
As well as constructing the campground lodge and it's associated facilities we will also be preparing and growing a rather large garden. The location of the garden site will be on the site of an even older garden which then had a tv tower on it for several years. Although the site has had significant tree growth since that time it remains one of the more sparsely vegetated areas in the vacinity surrounding the campground lodge site. Tao has begun clearing roughly a quarter acre and is setting aside a number of timbers to cure for use in construction projects. He hopes to turn much of the remaining brush into mulch for paths and using wood too thick for chipping as firewood to burn out tree stumps in the garden area.
